Category Browser Help
The Category Browser is a more advanced way of searching for the type of services you are looking for, and is divided into three sections: Scope, Directory Category and Secondary Category.
Scope
Here there are two options, which affect the type of results your category search will deliver. The default setting 'Items containing any terms' will list all entries which contain any of the categories you select. So, if you select 'Arts and Culture' in Directory Category, and then 'Accountants' from the second list, you will get a list of all the entries that match 'Arts and Culture', as well as those which match 'Accountants'.
Select 'Items containing all terms' however, and your search will deliver only those entries that are both 'Arts and Culture' and 'Accountants. In this example, you would probably get no results at all, unless there is an artist out there who is also an accountant! However, in the former example, you will probably get a few pages of results.
'Any terms' expands your search, wheras 'all terms' refines it.
Directory Category
This is the same list found on the main Directory Contents page, and used in isolation will work in the same way. However, by holding down the Control key (ctrl) on your keyboard, you can select more than one of the categories. With 'any terms' selected in Scope, selecting both 'professional services' and 'shops and retail' will deliver all entries that match either of those categories. You can of course select more than two categories in the list, or select 'none' and just use categories from the lower list (see below).
Secondary Categories
This list works in the same way as above, but is a longer, more specific list of categories, and is where using the features of 'Scope' can become more useful. Again, using the control key, you can select multiple categories from the list. For example, setting the main Directory Categories to 'none' and selecting 'bakeries' and 'takeaways', with 'Scope' set to 'any', will only list those entries that are categorised specifically as a takeaway or bakery. Set 'Scope' to 'all', and only entries which are both a takeaway and a bakery will be displayed. You can of course select more than two categories from the list, or simply choose one.
Please note however that they are not true sub-categories of the main Directory Categories, but combine or refine (depeding on the 'Scope') the results of a search.
At this time, there are no entries in the directory which have more than one main category attached to them, so you may find this feature more useful when you select 'none' in the Directory Category list and just use the Secondary Category list on its own. This however may change over time as the directory grows.
